Branch History
Dr. Alena Pace, Huntsville,Tx AAUW , and Mrs.Leland Best, Beaumont, TxAAUW, were instrumental in establishing a new branch in East Texas in1981-1982. Our charter members were teachers, librarians, home economists, and county agents. We expanded to include doctor, lawyers, college professors, and administrators. All of our members became
involved in the community.Higher education as been an expressed value in our branch. Though small in number, early on we established a scholarship for a local high school graduate, funded by an annal book sale in front of the local Walmart store. In 2015, a bridge luncheon/Silent auction became our new fundraiser and has continued to be a successful event that has allowed our original scholarship of $150 to grow to over several over $3,000.
Our branch over the years has organized projects to include a workshop for middle-school girls on career opportunities, voter registrations, assistance in Christmas Empty Stocking program, supplying needs for SAAFE house. We have supported the National Legal and Education funds,. Our branch meets on the third Monday from September through May at 11 am and enjoy lunch afterwards. Homes of members were the beginning meeting places. Now our meeting are held in community meeting rooms, and churches. New members have found this AAUW through the aAUWTexas website and the local newspaper, Polk County Enterprise. Women have said they have gained awareness of many areas and topics, and have created networks and friendships they may never have experienced.Join This Branch
